4 Things to Consider When Building a New Website

Mobile-First Design

What type of device are you using to read this blog? Chances are, more than half of you are currently on your phone. (Fun fact, less than 5% of you are on a tablet, the rest you fine folks are on desktop). Today, we are in a mobile-first world. Your new website better be responsive in design.

If you’re not sure if your site is set up properly for mobile, test it on Google’s Mobile-Friendly Tool. If you find out that your site fails, contact your development team, or reach out to us about fixing your mobile website. Anytime you are building a new website, it absolutely needs to be responsive to mobile.

Does your Design Work with the CMS?

There are a TON of different content management systems out there. Which one are you choosing for the new website? In our eight years of web design and development, we have yet to come across a CMS that we can’t handle. Each has benefits and flaws. It’s a good idea to know which CMS the new site will be on prior to finalizing designs. Certain content management systems can require intense, custom coding. Make sure the design of the site is compatible with both the CMS you chose and the dedicated team member in charge of using it.

What is the Purpose of the Site?

Often times businesses chose to build a new site simply to look up-to-date. There should always be more strategy behind development projects as big as building a new website. Here are a few questions to ask yourself prior to building a site. Your answers are the goals of your digital strategy. Use them to help you make educated decisions.

  • What is the purpose of the site? (Brand awareness, education, discussion or something else)
  • What do you want users to do on the website? (Fill out forms, drive social action, learn more about a topic or another type of action)
  • What does the sales funnel look like? (Wire frame, calls to action, content strategy and more)
