Social Media Day is a big deal around here. We live and breathe digital media, and when there’s an entire day dedicated to that, well, we throw a party. So we did.
While highlighting the tools of our trade, we kept things rooted firmly in real-life connections. Namely, cold beer, Mexican food and a photo booth.

For those of us who have been on the social media bandwagon since the beginning, Social Media Day is a case study in how platforms known primarily for cat videos and rating coeds attractiveness exploded into multi-billion dollar advertising powerhouses.
It’s also a chance to get back to the essence of what social media strives to do: connect people. There’s no social if you’re all by your lonesome, after all.

As people arrived at the party, they were asked to share where they’re from and a pin would drop on an interactive world map each time a new hometown was added. The result? A floor full of people from Oregon to Maine, the UK, China, Australia, Chile, Bulgaria and the UAE, all excited about digital media, craft beer and making real-life connections that began as social media connections.

At a point in time where coffee makers start automatically, doors have biometric locks and we can quantify (and share) everything from the quality of our sleep to the number of calories ingested to how many miles our dogs have walked, it’s nice to get back to the good stuff. The connecting. The conversations. The sharing of ideas, cold beers and new friends that got us where we are today.

The AE summer interns were more than ready to get in on the fun, and with photo booth props like over-sized Facebook likes, 3D glasses and cowboy hats, they were definitely getting into the spirit of Social Media Day.

Throughout the party, there was a live Twitter-feed projected on a lobby TV with social media trivia questions- and correct answers that were tweeted back earned party-goers a raffle ticket into the drawing for dinner for two at Perry’s Steakhouse.

Between chatting, craft brews and good eats, people were sharing the Agency Entourage love. Can’t say we blame ’em, we know how to throw one heck of a party.

The good people at Bitter Sister Brewery came out with four of their cleverly named brews- Busy Body, Cat Fight, Hissy Fit and Knock Out- and quickly became a party favorite. Rightfully so, too, those folks make a mighty fine beer. At the end of the party they left with empty kegs and a new, loyal following…The power of social media at work
