Hey guys! My name is Griffin Weinkam, I am a marketing major at Hardin-Simmons University out in Abilene, Texas, and I could not be more excited for my summer with Agency Entourage.
Discovering My Interest In Marketing
I didn’t know it at the time, but senior year of high school shaped my future much more than I could have foreseen. At the time, I was planning on going to Baylor to pursue God knows what major, as well as ending my tennis career, mainly because thirteen years of training and competing gets really, really old. I only had a few electives to take to complete the credits I needed for graduation, so I took Entrepreneurship and Sports & Entertainment Marketing because I heard we got to go to a Maverick’s game on a field trip.
I found the topics of these classes very interesting and paying attention was effortless for me. I was given the opportunity to talk to marketing executives for the Mavericks, the Stars, the Rangers and the Cowboys, all of which fascinated me, and while I thought I was going to enjoy seeing the tours of the venues and the actual sporting events, the marketing was what was most captivating to me. These field trips were that turned me towards marketing, a complete accident that guided me where I need to be.
Second Thoughts
During my final weeks of high school, I found myself second guessing my decisions on where to go to college. I had serious doubts about the big school feel of Baylor, and Hardin-Simmons seemed like a perfect mix of keeping the faith-based aspect while keeping the small school feel, so that’s where I ended up.
Once at HSU, I knew I had made the right decision. After dabbling in entry-level business classes and seeing how I liked each subject, I honed in on marketing as I assumed I would. I remember calling my mom after my last final of my first semester bursting with excitement, telling her I already wanted to go to grad school to extend college for a little while longer. Three years later, I am entering into my senior year and looking forward to my next steps in marketing, starting with this internship.
Falling Into Place
The field trips in high school, my wonderful professors, and my experience thus far at HSU have all led me to pursue a career in marketing, and in turn, led me to Agency Entourage. God works in mysterious ways, and has paved the way for me to end up here. I could not be more thrilled to begin learning and soaking in every ounce of knowledge I can from this internship. Hopefully I can provide as much for the agency as they will for me.
