2011 was a huge year for social media and I predict that 2012 will be an even bigger display of social sharing than ever before. It’s pretty amazing to have seen Facebook move beyond 800 million active users, with more than 200 million of them joining over the span of a year alone. But Facebook wasn’t the only social network to have a huge year. Twitter reached the 100 million user mark last year as well. All indications say that the storm of social media is only gaining force and doesn’t seem to be slowing down anytime soon. Here’s a few things to keep in mind when thinking about your social media future:
Facebook in 2012:
- The average Facebook user has about 130 friends and has liked 80 brand pages
- 56% of consumer are more likely to recommend a brand if they’re a fan of its Facebook page
- Every week 3.5 billion pieces of content are shared on Facebook
- Facebook is expected to reach 143.4 million US users in 2012
Twitter in 2012:
- 34% of marketers have generated leads using Twitter
- 55% of Twitter users use Twitter on their mobile device
If you are needing to convince your boss or maybe even justify the importance of digital media to yourself, these are some things to keep in mind. Chances are, your target market is using social media to communicate and determine their buying decisions. Being where they are is key to reaching them in new ways in 2012.
