Let me please preface this blog by saying that the following pros and cons of Facebook timeline are based on my own personal opinions. They are by no means a reflection of the feelings of the general public. However, I’m probably not the only one that shares some of these thoughts.
First and foremost, the constant evolution of Facebook is one of my most favorite and least favorite things about the platform. I know, I know, that sounds a little contradictory, but let me explain myself.
As an avid social media user I like that Facebook is always looking for ways to become more user friendly and enhance its’ capabilities. On the other hand, I don’t like that almost every time I get used to new settings and features, a new slew of changes are announced.
Here are a few of the pros and cons I’ve found with Timeline.
Pros:
- The cover photo allows for a more personalized and customized profile look.
- Timeline’s features will allow for the use of more visual media on brand pages.
- I have the option to review posts and photos I’m tagged in before they go on my timeline.
- The month to month breakdown allows for much easier navigation through past Facebook posts.
- I like being able to add milestones to my timeline to feature events that are otherwise not displayed.
Cons:
- The options for the very strict privacy settings that I had grown to love are almost non existent.
- I have to individually hide posts on my timeline.
- Being tagged in a picture means that it will be blown up across my profile.
- The things that my teenage self said to the Facebook world when I first created my account in 2007 are entirely too accessible.
- There is no rhyme or reason to the organization of posts on my timeline. I wish each column would be designated for certain content or types of posts.
I have a sneaking suspicion that I’m not the only one with some of these thoughts. My fingers are crossed that an update to Timeline will be introduced, sooner rather than later, to clean up a few of the new features. Until then, I’ll just have to continue monitoring my Facebook content both past and present. After all, I do have an image to uphold in the social media world now that I work for a digital marketing company!
If you could change one thing about Timeline, what would it be?
