Hey there, I am Tim Delahanty and I interned for Agency Entourage this spring. I grew up in New York City, and came to Dallas to attend Southern Methodist University. While looking for a spring internship, I received an email from the Temerlin Institute at SMU stating that Agency Entourage was looking for a digital marketing intern for the spring semester. I jumped on the opportunity and applied for the position. About two weeks later, I was working as a digital marketing intern with a fellow student from SMU, McKenna Cottam.
This was my second internship, but my first in an office environment. When I first started working for Agency Entourage, I got to shadow the employees and learn about their various roles at the full service digital marketing agency. While working with Interactive Producers Hayley Wood and Amanda Munster, I learned the importance of blogging, consistent online community building, organization and time management. I also shadowed DeAndré Upshaw, Video Strategist, who showed me different types of video editing, viral campaigns and an upcoming photo booth project.
The internship was a fully interactive, learn by doing, and hands-on process. I never once was asked to make coffee or run errands for anyone, even though there was the occasional trip to the mail room. During my time as an intern, I wrote blogs for a variety of clients in many marketing genres. I also did daily community building on platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest and Houzz in order to build clients’ reputations and credibility. While online community building and writing took up the majority of my time, I also transcribed videos, completed a competitive analysis, researched new clients, created press releases, researched new social media interfaces, and assisted with analytics reports.
Toward the end of my internship, I had the opportunity to listen to a client phone conference regarding their most recent social media performance and I also attended a client meeting with members of the Agency Entourage team. The client meeting experiences are what made this internship so much different than any of the others. Being able to observe a meeting and learning the clients’ needs and expectations allowed me to understand how the client communicates thus making it easier to write in their tone of voice. In addition to client meetings, I sat in on a client-sponsored seminar, which allowed me to see how they interact with their target audience.
Overall, the experience of being an Agency Entourage intern was amazing. I got to work in a collaborative team environment where everyone sits together and laughs, tosses ideas around, helps each other out, and encourages one another to think outside the box. I wasn’t alone in some dark room in the back of the office but instead, I got to watch all the action happening right in front of me. My experiences from this internship will stay with me throughout the rest of my career.
I would highly recommend this internship to any upper-class junior or senior who is looking for agency experience and really wants to develop professional skills. Being a member of this award-winning team will prepare you for a future in digital marketing and advertising.
